If you’re considering laser hair removal, this is usually the first question on your mind — and fair enough, since it’s the difference between a quick course of treatment and a much longer commitment. The short version: most people need somewhere between 6 and 8 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart, to see a significant, lasting reduction in hair growth. But that range exists for good reason, and understanding why will help you know what to expect from your own course.
Why it’s a range, not a fixed number
Laser hair removal only works on hair that’s actively growing. At any given time, the hair on your body is in different stages of its growth cycle — some strands are growing, some are resting, some are shedding — and the laser can only target hair that’s in the active (growth) phase. That’s the whole reason treatments are spaced weeks apart: each session catches a fresh batch of hairs as they cycle into that active phase, which is also why results build gradually rather than appearing after one visit.
What actually affects your number of sessions
A few things determine where you’ll land in that typical range:
- Hair colour and thickness. Darker, coarser hair absorbs the laser energy more effectively and tends to respond faster than fine or fair hair.
- Treatment area. Areas with faster hair growth cycles, like the upper lip or underarms, often need more frequent sessions than areas like the legs.
- Hormones. Hormonal factors can influence hair growth patterns, which is something we’ll talk through at your consultation.
- Skin tone and laser settings. Your therapist tailors the device settings to your skin type at every visit, which affects how efficiently each session works.
This is exactly why we start every client with a free consultation and patch test rather than quoting a number blind — it lets us give you a realistic, personalised estimate instead of a generic figure.
Why we structure treatment as a course, not single sessions
Because results build cumulatively across several sessions, we’ve built our pricing around that reality: pay for 5 sessions upfront on any Erased treatment plan, and your 6th session is completely free. It reflects how laser hair removal actually works — as a course, not a one-off — and rewards committing to the full journey rather than paying session by session.
What to expect along the way
Most clients notice visibly finer, sparser regrowth from around the third session onwards, with results continuing to build through to the end of the course. Some areas may need a top-up session down the line to maintain results, which is completely normal and something your therapist will flag if it’s likely for your treatment area.
Please note: this is general guidance based on typical treatment courses. Everyone’s hair and skin respond differently, so the number of sessions right for you can only be confirmed at your free consultation and patch test.
